Working towards development of a sustainable brucellosis control programme, the Azerbaijan example

Abstract Brucellosis caused by Brucella abortus and melitensis is endemic in the Republic of Azerbaijan but a complex mix fiscal, political technical constraints has impeded regulatory authority decision making for adoption sustainable national control programme. This paper reports series epidemiologic studies disease animals humans which we conducted between 2009 2020. A preliminary study subsequent larger using vaccination all non-pregnant female sheep goats breeding age females 3 8 months with conjunctival Rev1 vaccine both recorded significant reduction small ruminant seroprevalences. case winter pasture flocks found many farmers used raw milk to make dairy products sale, ate fresh cheese sold unregulated markets. Almost expressed willingness pay portion costs associated elimination brucellosis from their flocks. pilot human led large 2017 an overall seroprevalence 8.1% humans. Persons farm related occupations were at greater risk than urban persons males more likely be seropositive females.
